Weimaraner Lab Puppy Mix - Mother Terri, Father Avro. This puppy has all of his father's physical and personality attributes. He is very friendly, sociable, obedient and playful. He seeks attention. His body configuration is similar to his dad's. This evidence leads us to believe that this puppy also has no fear, just like his dad. Given the right opportunity, he will chase off bears without hesitation and by instinct Black Bear Farm was named for the unusual number of Black Bears on the property. Avro, this puppies dad, charges 500 lb bears, head on at a dead run. The bears always turn and go for the nearest 100' pine tree. This puppy is likely to be over 90 lbs when fully grown. His mother and father are proven water dogs. His coat is much softer than a Lab's coat. Its as soft as flax! Our Georgian Bay Sporting Dog breeding program is an effort to capture a Weimaraner's best characteristics in a dog that can withstand the winter cold. This puppy has the ideal coat to accompany you on skis, hiking, Skijoring. or walking on winter trails.
A GBSD comes in different colours created when recessive genes emerge after mixing Weimaraners with Labs. A GBSD is similar to a Weimaraner in temperament but calmer and has a thicker coat. The black puppies below will have a head and body shape that is more Weimaraner than Lab. Look at the ears!

What's a GBSD?
A GBSD (Georgian Bay Sporting Dog) is a Weimaraner Lab mix. We have produced first, second, third and forth generation puppies in our breading program.
Our GBSD puppies have enough Lab genes to soften their character, reducing hyper activity, lengthing the coat and reducing separation anxiety. Mixing the genes allows new and interesting colour combinations to emerge inlcuding Charcoal Black, Grey, Silver Grey, Brown and Tan, Black and Tan, Grey and Tan, Silver Grey and Tan, Brown, Sand, Cream and Gold.
Some of these colours are only produced every three to five litters, making them quite rare.

Among the many instinctive talents of our GBSD's is the fact that they don't run away! They stay close at hand when off leash (most of the time). Their make up is essentially Weimaraner so they are unusually bright, very exuberant, highly sociable and children friendly. Visit our 'Breeding Program' page to learn more about the astounding qualities our Georgian Bay Sporting Dog, Weimaraner hybrids and of Weimaraners.

Why Mix The Breeds?
The goals and purposes and history of our breeding program started in 2002, are described under our 'Breeding' link above.
However the short explanation is that we have created Weimaraners that have winter coats, dogs that stay with you when off leash rather than running off somewhere as a Lab will do, and dogs that are less hyper-active and anxiety-ridden than Weimaraners.
We have created a sporting dog that is a companion for outdoor adventurers and active families, that have been adapted to our northern climate. Our dogs are especially good with children as your will learn. We have posted almost 1000 photos of our puppies and dogs, including photos sent to us by current owners of our dogs sold in past years. Everything else about our Weimaraner Lab mixed puppies and dogs is similar, if not the same as you would expect from a Weimaraner.
Coat Length
GBSD 'Sandy', a liver Grey GBSD, with children Brett and Karli - Click to see comments from Jeff and Nicole of Wanapitei ON and Sandy's photo gallery.
The coat length of our dogs are much shorter than the coat of a typical Labrador. In summer, the GBSD coat is similar to, or slightly longer than a very short Weimaraner coat. In winter, especially if the GBSD is exposed to the cold weather, their overcoats are much longer and thicker, and can grow to about half the length of a Lab's coat. Yes they shed in spring and early summer but you can control shedding somewhat by using a horse currycomb instead of a brush. When we take our spring photography hikes into the mountains of Killarney, our dogs can loose their overcoats in a day or two as they play around us in the bush.
Some of our puppies are born with short, fine Weimaraner like coats and do not grow a significant winter coat at all. We train our own dogs as recreational sled dogs and we have the beginning of a sniffing dog training program! When we go on hikes in the LaCloche Mountains of Killarney, it never occurs to us to take a leash.
Many of our puppies are sold before they are born. Pickup or adoption dates are usually seven to eight weeks after the puppy's birth date and are subject to the puppies being successfully weaned otherwise the pickup date above could be delayed one or two weeks. A vet examination and health report, first vaccination and one year health warranty is included in our sale.
Shipping
We have shipped puppies to St. John's Newfoundland, Halifax NS, Edmonton AB, Vancouver BC, and Boston MA and Bellingham WA. We can arrange same day delivery to almost any North American city with an International airport. Average shipping costs are about $260.00 including crate and airfare. Shipping Stories.
We ship in the morning and your puppy will arrive in the afternoon or early evening in most cases. We ship puppies in an airline approved crate large enough for them to stand, turn around and lie down. The crate is equipped with a 'Lickit' style water bottle and spout and lined with hay to keep a puppy clean and dry. Air Canada live cargo is very effective. As one trained Air Canada live cargo person said to me ("P.J." in Sudbury), over and above trained staff, there is a dog owner working for Air Canada at every cargo location that will always take a special interest and an extra look at each dog being shipped." We have had a good experience shipping with Continental as well. Continental Airlines takes special pride in providing proper facilities and handling for puppies and dogs being shipped via their airline.
Storm, one of our puppies was flown to Edmonton and arrived to the open arms of Avery, age five. See photos.

Weimaraner's Magazine
There is a great 130 page magazine about Weimaraners available at PetSmart stores. Look for the 'Dogs' book rack in the store and then for a magazine called "Weimaraners". Its published by the editors of Dog Fancy Magazine and it is a wonderful source of information about the special requirements of a Weimaraner in terms of care, training and the duties and expectations the dogs hof individuals and families that adopt them. If you purchase a Weimaraner without getting a hold of this magazine, you risk not understanding the special needs of such an energetic, sociable and intelligent dog. You can also buy this magazine oneline and read more about the magazine from: DogChannel.com - Weimaraners Magazine. Unlike some dog books that have similar content for all dogs, this magazine was completely written by and with the help of a variety of Weimaraner breeders and experts.
Don't adopt a Weimaraner without knowing what to expect and asking yourself if you can really give your dog the time and attention it needs. Most Weimaraners that end up at Weimaraner Rescue shelters are there because their owners admit they can't give thier dog the time and attention it needs, every day.
"The Pointer hunts because birds are the most important thing in its life; the Weimaraner hunts because hunting is the most wonderful activity that can be shared with the people it loves." Alexander, Virginia & Isabel, Jackie. Weimaraner Ways. Sunstar Press: Germantown, MD, 1993
