A GBSD is a hybrid Weimaraner / Lab mix with more Weimaraner than Lab in the mix. Our dogs are mostly Weimaraners with some modified Lab traits that make them easier to live with. Our ten year breeding goal has been to formulate a calmer dog with positive Weim characteristics and body conformation with a longer coat to help the dog thrive out-of-doors in winter. We preserve the Weimaraner body shape but produce new coat colours and patterns. Our typical GBSD coat is still less than half the length of a Lab's coat, but is long enough for our the dogs to be used by us as sled dogs in winter. You can wash and dry a GBSD in five minutes or less! That's one reason they are easy to live with. We are not a CKC licensed breeder but we take our breeding responsibilities as seriously as any breeder. We have been on this mission since our first commercial litter in 2004 although we had our first GBSD in 2002. We have attempted to tell our story here as accurately as we can and we have tried to describe our dogs accurately without exaggeration or misrepresentation. However both Weimaraners and our dogs (called GBSD) are so unique that a rightful, forthright description of them seems to be exaggerated or even unbelievable to a dog fancier that is uninitiated to the Weimaraner breed. The description of our GBSD must seem unbelievable but in fact our GBSD hybrids share most Weimaraner traits. Also important are the Lab genes in the GBSD. The Lab is often described as 'North America's most popular family dog' . It's because the Lab is truly friendly and it's nature is so reliable. Lab genes in our GBSD augment our claim that GBSD are family friendly. (Back to top) We will not apologize for our enthusiastic description of our GBSD because both Weimaraners. Labs and GBSD are truly unique and all are suited to families that wish to have an easy maintenance, family dog (or hunting dog) that is truly intelligent and determined to become a loved and responsible family member and partner. What is different about a GBSD is a slightly longer coat length than a Weimaraner and a shorter coat than a Lab (for most of our puppies), reduced separation anxiety and sometimes, different coat colours. We offer traditional Weimaraner colours, grey and silver grey but GBSD arrive in other colours too, brown, chocolate brown, black, state grey, golden, blond and occasionally, tan and black, tan and brown, tan and grey, tan and silver grey however the two tone colours are rare.. There are few other breeds of dogs other than Weimaraners and Labs that can be compared to our GBSD that are so special. To read unbiased opinions about us and our dogs, read the letters we have received from families sent us from all over North America, published on our News/Blog site.
Our puppies and dogs are not available from any other source - not from pet stores, not from pet brokers, only from Black Bear Farm. Our breeding program produces a complex mix of Weimaraner and Labrador genes with more Weimaraner than Lab in the mix. It takes about four or five years to produce a second generation GBSD and six years to produce a 3rd generation GBSD. we have an ongoing breeding program to improve our dogs. There are regular changes that occur in the gene mix of our puppies. We strive to improve the quality of our puppies from litter to litter and from year to year. Our breeding program is ongoing. About Black Bear Farm. We have a large thirty five acre forested property with a one acre pond, surrounded by forested tracts in all directions. We have lots of room to build large pens, train our dogs, keep them healthy and strong and achieve our stated breeding goals. We breed and produce puppies from a large number of breeding females. We only sell puppies to families that have a detailed understanding of the needs of our dogs and the time and wherewithal to meet their needs. We don't subscribe to the practice of demanding a detailed applications before we decide to favour you with the adoption of one of our puppies as some breeders and rescue operations demand. In our opinion, the strategy of asking for a detailed application is fraught with weakness and is self defeating. (Back to top) If you are a potential purchaser of one of our GBSD, we will insure that you know the exercise and attention requirements of our dogs and the special needs of Weimaraners. If you allow us to carefully describe the needs of our dogs and if you can afford the price which is almost $1,000.00 per puppy or more, you can purchase one of our dogs. It matters not, if you have a small apartment or a huge rural lot. All that is important to us is that you have the knowledge, the time, the inclination and the maturity to give yourself every day to the needs and exercise requirements of our dogs. If things change in your life and you cannot properly look after your GBSD, return your dog to us. We will gladly allow you to bring it back. We will either find a new family or person to adopt your dog or we will care for it for the rest of its natural life. While its not stated in our warrantee, we have replaced dogs at no charge that were lost due to accidents and we reserve the right to do so or not. Our decision to do so is dependant upon the situation and availability of our puppies and dogs. See Warranty Stories'.
On our 'News/Blog ', site look up the category 'Owner Letters', which offers letters from current GBSD puppy owners. Look over the 'Warranty Stories' category too. Together, they tell you much about Georgian Bay Sporting Dogs and the way we manage Black Bear Farm. Any misgivings you may have about buying a puppy unseen from the Internet may be overcome by reading the letters and stories about our dogs sent by owners over the last six years. You are welcome to visit us in Killarney, anytime by appointment. Killarney is about five hours north of Toronto ON. GBSD are built like Weimaraners. They are tall, lean and sleek. Weimaraner separation anxiety has been reduced or eliminated in our GBSD due to the Lab influence in their genes. The breeds, Weim, Lab and GBSD are all very family friendly. The Lab influence in GBSD softens the character of the dog. GBSD are dependable, trustworthy and without an ounce of aggressiveness unless threatened or if you or your family is threatened. Weimaraners and GBSD have protective instinct that is invoked by some person, dog or animal (bears) displaying aggressive and threatening behavior towards you or your immediate family. In it's protective mode, the Weimaraner and GBSD demonstrate a fearless character and spirit. GBSD are obedient like Weimaraners, (more obedient than most dogs, perhaps all dogs). Many unique and wonderful qualities of the Weimaraner have been preserved in the GBSD. Their mission in life is to please you, to be with you, to share adventures with you and protect you and your family and fill your heart with love and affection, just like a Lab and reinforced by this loving Weimaraner trait.
If you have the time necessary to share your life with a high energy dog like a GBSD, Lab or Weimaraner then spend some of your time productively playing games that focus their intelligence and demonstrate their ability to learn fast , be obedient, listen well and play tracking and retrieving games with them. (Back to top) The unique, unrivalled and supreme quality of the Weimaraner and the GBSD breed is their intelligence and their need to interact with you and your family which means being observant, obedient and leaning fast. GBSD are smart enough to be the most mischievous dogs on earth. Left to their own devices and without training or supervision, a GBSD will always get into trouble. With training and supervision, they learn to avoid trouble. A GBSD simply wants to be part of everything you do, not just from puppy hood, but for the rest of its life. GBSD apply their intelligence and attention to becoming the most wonderful, attentive, affectionate and reliable companions one could ever hope to find in a dog. GBSD coats are much shorter than a Lab and shedding is reduced. GBSD stay with you when off leash. Stay in touch with BBF news and GBSD activities by visiting our News and Blog pages. Here is where we publish letters and photos and updates from the owners of many of our GBSD that now live across Canada and the United States from Newfoundland to BC and from Ontario to Massachusetts, New York, Kansas, California, and Washington State. (Back to top) GBSD As Family Dogs GBSD are proven family dogs and we have raised our child among them . We use GBSD as sled dogs and for skijoring. The Lab / Weim mix dogs do better at temperatures below -13th. and will play all day outside even at -30 C. as long as they have a good shelter to retreat to when they finally need to rest and warm up. We supply them with insulated dog houses and the puppies have heated dog houses.. Mixing the genes allows new and interesting colour combinations to emerge including Charcoal Black, Grey, Silver Grey, Brown and Tan, Black and Tan, Grey and Tan, and Tan, Brown, Sand, Blond and Red. Some of these colours are only produced every three to five litters, making them rare for us. Tony, shown to the right, is the rarest. Over six years and one hundred puppies, we have only produced two black and tan Weimaraner / Lab GBSD. We sold the first one, 'Tony', not realizing how rare he was and we kept the second one 'Toni', born in 2007. She will be two in 2009. Both Tony (2005 shown above) and Toni (2007) are identical and are brother and sister. (Back to top) Character Differences Labs and Weimaraners differ in the amount of attention they pay to their master. Both dogs are obedient, loving, smart and easily adapted to a family living situation. If you leave a room, a Lab may be happy to stay by the fire or it may decide to follow you. A Weimaraner will follow you every time. A Weimaraner's bond with its master is either stronger or more dependant or both. (Back to top) Be sure to view our extensive photo galleries and testimonial letters. Our Blog tracks recent BBF news, owner photos and letters. What is the difference between a 50 / 50 Weim Lab cross and a GBSD? The traits of a
GBSD simply make living with your dog easier. A
GBSD is not a 50 / 50 mix of Weimaraner and Lab.
A GBSD is a complex mix of Weim and Lab that has
more Weim in the mix than lab. Our mix makes a
GBSD calmer, stay with you when off leash and a
dog that can be toweled dry in two minutes. GBSD
has less separation anxiety than Weims and have
slightly longer coats than Weims but not anywhere
near the length of a lab coat or of a 50/50 mix.
A GBSD is ideal for active families that love the
outdoors in any season. In our experience, a
50/50 Weim Lab mix will not stay with you when
off leash - they wanderer like labs and they have
longer lab like coats that you cannot towel dry
in just a minute or two.(Back to

(Back to top) Why Mix The Breeds? Among the many instinctive talents of our GBSD is the fact that they don't run away! They stay close at hand when off leash (most of the time). Their make up is essentially Weimaraner so they are unusually bright, very exuberant, highly sociable and children friendly. Visit our 'Breeding Program' page to learn more about the astounding qualities of Weimaraners and our Georgian Bay Sporting Dogs. The goals and purposes of our breeding program started in 2002 are described under our 'Breeding' link above. However the short explanation is that we have created Weimaraners that have winter coats, dogs that stay with you when off leash rather than running off somewhere as a Lab will do, and dogs that are less hyper-active and anxiety-ridden than Weimaraners. We have created a sporting dog that is a companion for outdoor adventurers and active families, that have been adapted to our northern climate. Our dogs are especially good with children as your will learn. We have posted almost 1000 photos of our puppies and dogs, including photos sent to us by current owners of our dogs sold in past years. Character GBSD puppies generally have similar characters in terms of intelligence, willingness, obedience, child friendliness, off-leash following and general friendliness. There is little difference between a GBSD and a Weim other than separation anxiety which is reduced or eliminated. Some are more subdued by nature and other more gregarious and accepting of strangers. Socializing your puppy with other dogs and strangers has to be managed by introducing strangers and other dogs to them so that this becomes the norm in their lives up to 22 weeks of age. By that time the 'norm' is locked in and dogs and strangers are treated as a lab would treat them. Weims are usually more aloof. GBSD can go one way or the other depending what the norm is in their first formative 22 weeks of life. Females are 65 to 85 lbs but 65 to 75 lbs. is average. There usually is a smaller puppy but 'sometimes' they surprise you and grow to be large sized dogs. Males grow to 75 - 90 lbs.(Back to top) Coat LengthThe coat length of our dogs are much shorter than the coat of a typical Labrador. In summer, the GBSD coat is longer than the very short coat of a Weimaraner. In winter, especially if the GBSD is exposed to the cold weather, their overcoats grow are longer and thicker, and can grow to about half the length of a Lab's coat. Yes they shed in spring and early summer but you can control shedding somewhat by using a horse currycomb instead of a brush. When we take our spring photography hikes into the mountains of Killarney, our dogs can loose their overcoats in a day or two as they play around us and run through the trees and bushes. We train our own dogs as recreational sled dogs. When we go on hikes in the LaCloche Mountains of Killarney, it never occurs to us to take a leash.See photos of past litters. Mature GBSD Dog Description: Reddy's May puppies will grow to become gentle, attentive, obedient, tall strong and elegant. Females will grow to about 65 - 75 lbs. and males will grow to about 70 to 80 lbs. Their coat lengths will be about half to three quarters the length of a Lab's coat. Eyes will be amber or light brown. They will not have the anxiety levels of a Weim. They will not run away when walked 'off leash'. They can be easily trained not to pull when walked on a leash despite the fact that we also train them as sled dogs and they learn to pull very well! They are very smart. When we first started breeding, we trained Annie and Avro 'not ' to pull when walked on a leash. Some months later we decided to try them as sled dogs. Now they pull when sledding but they still they know not to pull when walked on a leash. (Back to top)Exercise Requirements GBSD exercise requirements are the same as any large hunting dog. They need twenty to thirty minutes per day off leash plus they need sessions of an hour or more, off leash, two times per week. 'Off leash' means giving them exercise in an area where they can run freely. For every mile you walk they will run circles around you and cover ten to twenty times the distance you cover but they generally stay within fifty yards of you. (back to top) Want To Know More? There is a great 130 page magazine about Weimaraners available at Pet Smart stores. Look for the 'Dogs' book rack in the store and then for a magazine called "Weimaraners". Its published by the editors of Dog Fancy Magazine and it is a wonderful source of information about the special requirements of a Weimaraner in terms of care, training and the duties and expectations the dogs and of individuals and families that adopt them. If you purchase a Weimaraner without getting a hold of this magazine, you risk not understanding the special needs of such an energetic, sociable and intelligent dog. You can also buy this magazine one line and read more about the magazine from: DogChannel.com - Weimaraners Magazine. Unlike some dog books that have similar content for all dogs, this magazine was completely written by and with the help of a variety of Weimaraner breeders and experts. Don't adopt a Weimaraner without knowing what to
expect and asking yourself if you can really give
your dog the time and attention it needs. Most
Weimaraners that end up at Weimaraner Rescue
shelters are there because their owners admit
they can't give their dog the time and attention
it needs, every day. Weimaraner Links Learn more about the Weimaraner Breed - Weimaraner Association of
