The Weimaraner is naturally attracted to water but they are not as mad about it as a Lab. Introductions to the water should be natural, not forced. The focus should be on playing at the water's edge rather than on the water itself. They will refuse to fetch a stick thrown into deep water. Don't push them. Simply start again in the shallows and save the deep water fetch for another day. It happens gradually, not all at once. Slow and easy does it and after a few fun sessions, they find themselves going deeper to fetch a stick. One day they start swimming on their own.
This clip was taken on Thanksgiving weekend 2006. Molly, a Weimaraner Lab cross, has a typical Weimaraner body size and configuration and is six months old. Charley, her brother from our 2005 litter, is one year and a few months old. Charlie is now over 95 lbs, has a true Weimaraner body shape but has a slightly heavier bone structure. He is heavier and stronger than most Weimaraners and is being trained as a member of my sled dog team.
This is the puppy's first time playing at the waters edge. Chief, the sand coloured Weimaraner, is the father of both dogs.
Annie, not shown, is the mother of Molly and Charley. Annie is a Black Weimaraner Lab cross and at four years old is about 90 lbs. The dogs spent the day with me running off leash but never leaving me.
"The Pointer hunts because birds are the most important thing in its life; the Weimaraner hunts because hunting is the most wonderful activity that can be shared with the people it loves."
