Mary's Puppy Flies To Her In Boston Mary G., from a small town near Boston, took delivery of her brown female Weimaraner Lab puppy, (yet unnamed) on Tuesday June 12, 2007. Mary and her family live in the country and the puppy will have lots of land to roam. Mary's sons and daughters are thrilled. We delivered the puppy in a medium sized crate with a 'Lickit' water bottle attached, at 8:30 in the morning to the Air Canada 'Jazz' cargo office at the Sudbury airport to do the paperwork for a 9:50 flight to Toronto where the puppy would meet a connecting flight to Boston. We provided an envelope with the puppy receipt, Vet vaccination record and the Vet's health examination certificate, taped tot he crate. We supplied the puppy with a 'Harley Davidson' denim jacket too, just in case, but the friendly and concerned cargo manager lady at the Jazz counter suggested that at this time of the year, heat is a bigger problem than cold and that the jacket was probably not needed. Mary's puppy boarded the 9:50 flight, flew to Toronto in less than an hour where she was carried to Air Canada's 'Live Animal' facility to wait for her 1:25 PM Air Canada flight to Boston' Logan Airport. When readying Mary's puppy for its flight at the Jazz Cargo office, I asked the cargo manager about the care the puppy would receive in Toronto. Her answer came without hesitation and was comforting. She said: "In every Air Canada cargo office, big or small, there is always one or two dog owners and they always take a special interest in the dogs, especially puppies". The logic of it struck me. Over and above the assurance that Air Canada Live Animal handling policies and procedures are well thought out and effective, there is always one or two dog owners at every cargo centre that really care about and know about dogs and puppies and would be doing the right things for our puppies regardless. For the second time, our puppy arrived in excellent shape and had not even messed up the crate!
When Mary arrived to pick up her puppy, we all held our breath. While we had done our homework and thought we understood all the requirements to allow a puppy to clear customs, we wondered what might have been missed. The problem being, if the paper work isn't right, huge disappointments and time delays will be experienced by the puppy buyer. We had discussed the needed papers with Air Canada and to insure that we had a complete picture, we researched and found a helpful gentleman in Boston; Brad Mitchell of The commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, Department of Agricultural Resources. He quickly confirmed some things with a colleague and we had the answers we needed and the confidence to ship our puppy. Despite our planning, not all was perfect. When Mary arrived at the Air Canada cargo office at Boston's Logan Airport with her teen aged children, to pick up her puppy, the Air Canada representative explained that the puppy's documents had to clear customs at the US Customs office in downtown Boston! For some one who had just travelled an hour or more, late in the day, this was very bad news. The Air Canada representative quickly understood the problem Mary was facing and made a brilliant suggestion. He explained that if she waited till after 5:00 P.M., she could visit the customs office at the airport and explain that she had been sent their by Air Canada and that she understood that the downtown office closed at 5:00! Mary did just that. The airport customs officer asked who sent her to him. "Air Canada" she replied and added that she was told that the down town office closed at five. The customs man smiled and said that the downtown customs office was open till eight P.M. and Air Canada knows that. He then added that Mary was lucky, and that he was feeling good and would process her papers anyway! For some unexplained reason she discovered she needed two copies of receipts for the puppy purchase. One we had sent in our crate envelope and luckily she also had a second receipt, her credit cart receipt for the puppy purchase. All is well that ends well but next time we will call the customs office at the destination, in advance.
