Hi Brien,

I am very lazy about taking pictures – rely on my friends to send me their copies – otherwise I would have sent more!  But I have also discovered Freya is not easy to photograph – she is always on the move!  I enclose a couple of puppy pictures anyway – see what you get at 10 weeks, and then at 50 weeks!  She went from 7.7 pounds to 77!

We have a fabulous set-up…I live right next to Mount Royal so I generally take her for a long run in the morning.  She is happily crate-trained (this was a necessity because as a puppy she chewed everything in sight – including vinyl chair covers, shoes, an antique pair of aboriginal deerskin beaded gloves :( …) and lies down with her toys when I leave for work as soon as I say, “Maison, Freya.”  …A neighbour who has a pitbull mix takes the two of them out for a second jaunt on the mountain in the afternoon – on the back trails they can run free.   So she is getting lots of exercise aside from our long weekend runs, and she’s a very happy dog.  My goal for next winter is to get her out skijoring…she is a natural leader (you will notice she is at the front of the running pack with that gang in the photo — and that’s NOT because I am as fast as lightning, but she is!)

HI Brien,

Have been meaning since forever to send you updates about Freya, our “Georgian Bay Sporting Dog” who turned one on May 10th.  She is doing so well!  I am training for an Ironman and she is my running partner.  She weighs in at 77 lbs, sleek and trim and healthy.   I enclosed a few pics taken on April 26th in Mont Tremblant provincial park.

”Freya”, BTW, is the Norse goddess of love and war!

Best,

LP

Picking up Stella in Killarney

Hi Brien,

I just wanted to give you an update on Stella. She’s doing really well with us. The first few days were difficult for her, as everything was new…   Within a few days, she was a completely different dog. Now she is peppy and playful and very loving. We don’t have a fence yet, but she doesn’t stray far from us. She comes when she’s called and we’ve managed to teach her to walk with the leash. She even pees on command. Yesterday we visited another dog and she had a blast rolling around with him. I’ve attached 2 photos of her, one when we picked her up at Killarney Outfitters and another in our back yard. I’ll send more photos when she gets a bit bigger.
Take care,
P.

Hi Brien

It’s been some time since I’ve had the opportunity to send any updates on Scout and our family.  So I thought I’d let you know how we are. We have a new addition.  Our daughter Emily was born on Jan 7, 2010.  Scout has been great! No sign of jealousy. He has carried on as his usual happy self showing lots of interest in the baby.  Here are some pictures  (click the link to the left to see ‘Scout’s’ photo album. Scout, born in 2006,  lives near Collingwood, on Georgian Bay.)

Hi Brien,
Just wanted to send you an update on our pup Lucy from Callie’s January 2010 litter. Lucy has been great company for us and we have had a lot of fun training her and spending time outdoors. She loves going hiking and camping and especially loved when we went up to French River. She is very healthy and happy and everyone comments on how beautiful she is, some people have even asked if they could take her photo! We have been feeding her a raw diet and her coat and colour are very shiny and pretty. I have attached a photo of her at 14 weeks. She usually looks like she is smiling :) She is now 19 weeks and around 40 pounds. She still has quite a ways to grow to fit into her huge paws!

Hi Brien:
Thought I would give you a quick update on Puppy #7, aka Dexter!

We absolutely love him – what a wonderful, loving and fun puppy. He never, ever stops – always into or up to something, so full of personality and spunk! To date (had him on the scales this morning) he is 14 lbs, eating like a small horse and growing like a weed. He sleeps in his crate from 9:00 pm straight through until 5:30 am!! How lucky are we? Here are a few photos so you can see the change in him! Regards,
Mary H Newtonville ON.

Protective Instincts

GBSD Penny has a proven protective nature

Duke is a BBF Weimaraner

Weimaraners and GBSD have a protective instinct that is not well known. When we first acquired our GBSD named Annie and Avro, black 50/50 dogs, they started chasing all the black bears away or more often as not, they treed them. Some of these bears were 400 lbs plus.  Avro, our big 90 lb male, actually bit the bears or jumped on them as they ran for a tree. These dogs were fearless. I supposed at first that this was their hunting instinct at play and thought little more about it for lots of dogs chase bears. Some two years later I purchased a large Weimaraner male named Duke. Duke was young (2 years old) and very playful but he had a habit of inviting one to play ‘Take My Stick’ by picking up a stick and shaking it and growling and prancing like a menacing dog! It was all in play of course but my much smaller and older Weimaraner Chief didn’t understand. He charged Duke from about 30 yards away. He leaped on top of Duke after flying through the air for the last ten feet and knocked Duke to the ground. I was startled but rushed to pull Chief off of Duke in time. After thinking about this performance I realized that Annie and Avro’s interest in chasing bears wasn’t to please them but to protect me. I was thunder struck and dumbfounded at the realization.

It took the other BBF dogs some time to understand that Duke wasn’t a threat. A week later Duke started his growling and prancing with a stick routine and Penny, a mature 85 lb daughter of Annie, did the same thing to Duke as did Chief. I saved Duke from Penny in a flash as Penny was determined to fight him to protect me.  Duke was young and not experienced and would not have had a chance defending himself against Penny.

It took me years to see the first instance of the protective spirit of the Weimaraner and the GBSD. The GBSD protective spirit will show itself as the dog matures but only if something or someone threatens you or your family.  Sasha from Saskatoon learned first hand about her dogs protective spirit.  Here is her story (Sasha name her GBSD ‘Duke’ too). http://www.blackbearfarm.com/wp/?cat=67

When they were bred as a ‘forester’s dog’ or ‘game warden’s dog’ hundreds of years ago by the aristocracy of the Weimer region of Germany, they were bred in part to be bold and fearless in the face of large game like a stag or a wild boar. Weimaraners are used a police dogs even today in some European countries. Its probably safer to go walking, hiking or jogging with your Weimaraner or your GBSD at your side than to go alone.

Hi Brien,

long time, no talk. I guess Daisy’s birthday was sometime this week; which makes her 4 now.  We are doing well here.  Have a new addition to the family, Logan (our son, not another dog :-) Daisy is doing really well with him (took a couple corrections early on when they were both jockeying for the best view out the front door), but now she understands that supplementary feedings always come from him.

I keep wondering when we are going to bump into a relative of hers here in Toronto…..would be nice to have a blog (or something) to reach out and find her siblings should they be in the general GTA area.

Her health has been good for the most part.   Oh yeah, also had a pretty good injury a bit ago where she ran full tilt into the end of a small culvert.   Thanks to the local vet we managed to staple and stitch every thing back together again and no long term damage.  Gotta love how resilient dogs are.

There pretty much isn’t a day that goes by where some complete stranger says that she is the best looking dog they have ever seen.  Her grey colour is striking.  One of our dog neighbours called her the ‘Naomi Campbell’ of the dog world.  Tell Chief and Annie they make nice dogs (hope they are still in your life).

I have attached a couple photos of our ‘super model’.  On Father’s day and Christmas.

Jennifer

Brien,

Wanted to send you a recent photo of Daisy at the Humber Bay beach in Toronto a few weekends ago when it was terribly foggy.  She is doing very well, although initiated a hobby of woodworking/carving yesterday on a chair.  Not bad for an 8 month old!

I think she looks more like Chief than Annie, what do you think?

Merry Christmas!

GBSD Duke Saskatchwan

Subject: Duke (Libby, Saskatoon 2007)

Hello Brien,

Ben and I just wanted to give you a little update about our beloved Duke.

He is the most affectionate dog anyone in our family has ever known – including my father who owned a wiem back in the 70′s. Those who remember the wiems on Ben’s family farm growing up remember them as temperamental and high strung. Duke is anything but that.

Wherever Ben is, Duke follows. From the moment Ben leaves for the office in the morning, Duke is my constant companion. And so it goes… if I leave the house and for some (rare) reason that Duke does not accompany me, sitting upright in the passenger seat watching the world go by – he stays to the side of whoever else is in the house… and if left alone, he simply takes his spot on the mat at the door and awaits our return. We have NEVER returned to the house to find destruction or mayhem. We began leaving him at home for short periods at two years of age and now we can safely leave him for three to four hours.

As I said, Duke is extremely loving and affectionate. He almost considers himself a lapdog. He is always in a snuggle position with one of his people, head buried under our arms or simply resting on our shoulder.

Duke has personality to spare! He is full of joy and life at the dog park and makes friends wherever he goes. At home he is mellow and gentle, even if he misses his daily walk for any reason he manages to stay fairly calm, cool and collected. He has his crazy moments of course but they are more a source of laughter for the family rather than an annoyance.

I especially can attest to the fact that Duke is a sensitive dog with a “sixth sense” for our feelings. I suffer from chronic illness and if I am bedridden, he will lay bedside for hours at a time, snoozing and watching me. Absolutely hours. Just yesterday I was on the sofa for the better part of the day and he remained there with me all afternoon, snuggling under the electric blanket. He snored a bit but I was so comforted by his presence it didn’t matter ;)

One last thing – I was alone at home one weekend while Ben was away on business. There was an attempted break-in and Duke leapt through the front door, I could not hold him back and he barked ferociously (I’d never seen him like that) at the man attempting to come through the porch. The man backed away and Duke proceeded to push his head through the porch door and stand on the step growling and barking! No one was as shocked as me – except maybe the bad guy!

Thank you for sending us our Duke. He is a treasure for all of us. He is loving, loyal, protective when need be… but most of all… a member of the family. A 90 pound lapdog.

Take care,

Sasha Libby
